Pre-treatment – The First Step to Decades of Corrosion-Free Steel

Before steel is dipped into molten zinc, it must undergo rigorous pre-treatment and surface cleaning to ensure proper zinc adhesion, uniform coating, and long-lasting corrosion protection.
This step is crucial because galvanizing only protects what it can touch—any oil, rust, or scale left on the steel will prevent proper bonding.
Degreasing / Alkaline Cleaning – Removes oil, grease, and dirt using caustic or alkaline solutions.

Why is Pre-treatment Important?

  • Improves Coating Quality – Clean steel ensures zinc metallurgically bonds with the surface.
  • Enhances Durability – Eliminates impurities that could cause coating failures.
  • Smooth & Uniform Finish – Removes rust, scale, and contaminants for consistent appearance.

The Pre-treatment & Cleaning Process

  • Degreasing / Alkaline Cleaning – Removes oil, grease, and dirt using caustic or alkaline solutions.
  • Rinsing – Washed with clean water to remove cleaning chemicals.
  • Pickling (Acid Cleaning) – Immersion in hydrochloric or sulfuric acid baths to remove rust, scale, and mill coatings.
  • Rinsing Again – Ensures no acid residues remain on the steel surface.
  • Fluxing - A zinc-ammonium chloride flux solution prepares the steel, preventing oxidation before galvanizing and aiding zinc adhesion.
